Albion – Notes

Notes from class:

  1. Sympathy is created for the soldier when we discover that his idea of being a soldier was misplaced.
  2. We learn, early in the poem that,
  3. “I dreamed the dream of a hero’s welcome, of flags and bunting// lining the streets”
  4. Here, the “bunting” is a synecdoche for a hero’s welcome: he anticipated a return to a street party but it did not come.
  5. Because of this disappointment we sympathise with him.

 

We further have cause to sympathise…

The failure of support for the soldier also…

A reader also sympathises…

Without adequate health care…

Going without the treatment the protagonist needs…

Clearly unable to cope, the protagonist…
