After Tom and Hester fall into the Out-Country, they reluctantly agree to pursue London. The Lord Mayor visits Valentine and reveals that London possesses something valuable called “MEDUSA”.
Back in the Out-Country, Hester reveals that Valentine killed her parents and scarred her face. As Hester’s leg worsens, they catch a lift with a small town (Speedwell). However, they are drugged by the town’s mayor.
