The Crucible – Why is Proctor Insecure?

Puritan society – Proctor is a dissenter – conflict with Parris – feels the minister is draconian

Proctor is tortured by guilt for breaking the rules of the Bible, and of his society – throughout he tries to “make right” his relationship with his wife – he absolutely rejects Abigail – affair must be kept secret

Reputation is all in the village – a person’s respectability defines their position in the town

Proctor is antagonistic towards the court – he knows they are making incorrect decisions based on Abigail’s testimony – this explodes when they detain his wife – the audience knows that Abigail is lying – causes sympathy for John

Strength in his convictions.

Puritan society adheres to the Bible and damns all promiscuity.
