Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde – P.E.A.

Para 1: Conflict in social behaviour

Society expects him to behave a certain way
“We told the man we could make such a scandal out of this, as should make his name stink from one end of London to the other.”
“stink” – colloquial/ slang – abrupt and harsh sound – anger
Reputation will be ruined ENTIRELY

Jekyll wants to behave badly – needs a cover
“they have the expression, and bore the stamp of lower elements in my soul” – he recognizes that there is something in the appearance of Hyde which is definitely Jekyll – something that has always been a part of him
The idea of a “stamp” as a brand – he is marked by his evil behavior

Society is appalled when it see the result of this desire

“London was startled by a crime of singular ferocity and rendered all the more notable by and the high position of the victim.”
Suggestion that upper class is more important than working class – the murder is “more notable” because of this
      “ferocity” suggestion of animal violence
      “startled”- personification? Exaggeration?
