In Memorium – In Memory of…

In a cemetery people tend to be quiet and careful not to make a noise. Most people understand that it is respectful to other people who may be visiting and want to be left to their own thoughts without being disturbed. It also seems right to respect the people who have been through life and have now passed on.

War Memorials are monuments – they do not have bodies under them like gravestones do. Possibly the most striking difference is that memorials are built in the middle of towns where people still work. They are not outside people’s everyday lives. This is to ensure that people are often reminded of the sacrifices made by soldiers in the two world wars, so that they will be remembered as part of our everyday lives.
